You even get your happily ever after….not a typical one but still. It’s just really awesome, and the way the author describes the uses of it whether it’s chanting, healing, or using it for battle it really captures your attention and leaves you wanting more, MORE MAGIC!ģ.) It’s also essentially a fairy tale, so those of you who dig those fairy tale retelling should definitely be picking up “Uprooted” as your next read. The magic in this book is super cool, only a certain amount of people have the ability to use magic, and even then it’s a resource you can use it all up. There’s also a BADASS cast of supporting characters, I was practically swooning……or maybe really swooning……Ģ.) Maaaaaagic. He’s also a pretty bad ass wizard.Īlso in “Uprooted” our main antagonist is The Wood. And avoiding spoilers all I’ll say is he, too, turned around as a character and opened up revealing a really good guy deep down. Right off the bat I hated him, he was super rude to everyone especially Agnieszka.

The Dragon is kind of an asshole….seriously. Kasia, Agnieszka’s best friend, is almost Mary Sue- esque but I still enjoyed her, she’s the brave and strong one in this friend duo. By the end of the story she has developed extraordinarily without losing who she is at heart. Agnieszka is a believable heroine, she isn’t brave or strong or special (at least not special right away in the story) she’s actually very sloppy and she has no idea what she’s doing at all. Things I loved about “Uprooted” (and you’ll also probably love)ġ.) Characters and their development.

Indeed, I will give a BAG of cookies to Naomi Novik for this book! This book IS a stand alone it may not seem like it when you’re reading it but Ms. This book is like nothing else I’ve ever read, it is quite simply magical (pun intended). For when the Dragon comes, it is not Kasia he will choose. And there is no way to save her.īut Agnieszka fears the wrong things. She knows- everyone knows-that the Dragon will take Kasia: beautiful, graceful, brave Kasia, all the things Agnieszka isn’t, and her dearest friend in the world. The next choosing is fast approaching, and Agnieszka is afraid. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood. Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But the corrupted Wood stands on the border, full of malevolent power, and its shadow lies over her life. Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river.
